The Cartoon Telephones of Emile Mercier

Emile Mercier was a famous Sydney cartoonist from the 1950's who had a topical cartoon published in the now defunct "Sydney Sun" every weekday evening for many years. His cartoons are characterised by springs holding up the floor, an obsession with gravy, that funny little bearded man in the 3 wheeled car and, sometimes, unusual drawings of telephones and similar devices. We published quite a few Mercier cartoons featuring telephones in the May 1997 newsletter. Here are most of those cartoons again plus a few more. Remember it was working class Sydney in the 50's. Enjoy!

Then there's those we sort of "modified" to suit our needs.......
